Strathcona County Update

County Running Scared

After Strathcona County Transit members held a rally at County Council, the County took unilateral action to pull out of bargaining with ATU and filed for mediation. Mediation is the next step in the process to a real and valued Collective Agreement. This works well for ATU. We were at an impasse with the County at negotiations and were considering advancing to mediation as well. ATU’s presentations to County Council struck a cord with the County Administration, who are not used to their workers talking directly to County Council.

What it means to you

It means we in the Union (that includes all of the SCT members) stay the course; stand strong; stand together. Anyone who suggests that this is the end of the road does not understand the process. Mediation Services will reach out to the Union to discus what mediator would be best suited to this dispute and will appoint someone. We’ll insist it’s someone who can act quickly to get some dates lined up. And then we get back to work. Provincial Mediators are trained and skilled at getting the Parties to a resolution. ATU has been in Mediation many times. In fact, it’s rare that we get to a deal without that step.

Stay Strong! First contracts always take time. We WILL get there.
